Answer: Three places (primarily).
Explanation: In 2 Peter 3:5 we read, ??the earth was formed out of water and by water.? (NIV)
On the first day of creation week God began with the ?Big Splash,? Earth. So, to begin with God created ex nihilo (from out of nothing) water. On the second day He separated water from water.
And God said, ?Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water.? So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. And it was so. God called the expanse ?sky.? And there was evening, and there was morning ? the second day. And God said, ?Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.? And it was so.
God called the dry ground ?land,? and the gathered waters he called ?seas.? And God saw that it was good. (Genesis 1:6-10, NIV)
Before the Flood, Earth was protected by an immense water-vapor canopy that rode upon the atmosphere. This was an enormous reservoir of water.
It?s important to note that there was no rain until the Flood, ?? for the LORD God had not sent rain on the earth?, but streams camp up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground ---? (Genesis 2:5-6, NIV) Earth was basically a green house, protected from the harmful rays of the cosmos, with a temperate climate. (Not only was it temperate, but it was mild too : )
On the third day of the creation week we have the appearance of dry land.
And God said, ?Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.? And it was so. God called the dry ground ?land,? and the gathered waters he called ?seas.? And God saw that it was good. (Genesis 1:9-10, NIV) This passage proposes a single, very large landmass. This huge continent had vast subterranean water reservoirs. These subterranean (below the surface of the ground) water reservoirs are implied by the beginning of the flood when ?? all the great deep burst forth, ?? (Genesis 7:11, NIV)
Sooooooo, we have water in three primary places:
1. Seas
2. Canopy
3. Subterranean
Secondary: All plants, trees, animals, and humans have a relatively high percentage of water.
Note that in Genesis 7:11 the springs of the great deep burst forth first. This bursting forth may have been in the form of steam or hot water geysers, which would in turn shoot holes in the canopy, thus beginning its? collapse of forty days and nights.
Conclusion: There was plenty of water available to completely flood all of Earth.
