When Did Evil Come to Earth?

Was there evil in the Garden of Eden before Eve ate the fruit? Did the serpent become evil when man fell or was he evil from the beginning? Did man in fact become like God knowing good and evil because once they had eaten the forbidden fruit they saw from God's perspective (at least in some limited way) the evil that was always there and succumbed to it?
Just speculating.
